Origami is the Future
A team of researchers is using 3D printers in the machine shop in order to
create smart structures and objects that could collapsed and absorb energy as
well as spring back into the place by using the geometric principles of
origami. It is envisioned by the researchers that the next generation of solar
panels and air bags will be shaped by the ancient Japanese art of paper
folding.
Origami is that branch of art which uses geometry and it is the same base
for the mechanical structures. The existing origami uses paper but most of the
engineering applications demands for the materials with definitive thickness
and sufficient strength and stiffness in order to properly perform that’s where

An origami expert has the ability to turn to turn a few basic folds into
the complex design. The only challenge for the engineers is to create a system
of folds that is structurally sounds and also could be reproduced. The
researchers are using met-materials in order to replicate the patterns and
shapes we encounter every day.
This work of the researchers with Top MBA College inJaipur is the combination of the
science and art and that’s why sometimes they inspired from the museum or floor
tiles. A paper version has been created by the researchers of the design along
with the origami printer. Then they considered the sample by folding and
unfolding it in order to ensure that it can be replicated by using stronger
materials.
One they are successful, 3D printers can fabricate geometric shaped pieces
in the targeted materials which are usually plastics and sometimes can take time
to depend on each piece’s size. Then final structures are reassembled by suing
metal hinges for mimicking origami paper folds.
By applying a small amount of pressure, it can change the shape of the
structure. As the hinges can absorb the stress, the change can be made multiple
times. The researches focus on the smart structure that has the ability to
expand strategically without creating defects in the actual structure.
Functional applications have been calculated by the researchers which are based
on structures on their agility.
