BMI Systems for Controlling Robotic Arm
A brain machine interface has been developed by the
researchers in order to manipulate a robotic arm when the subject’s hands are
engaged in the different activities. This new system of the researchers has
been published in many news papers in which it is reported that they are efficient
in working in testing with volunteers.
There are multiple previous researches by students of Jaipur EngineeringColleges with the
help of which researchers developed of BMI systems. In such kinds of systems, a
user wears a cap with electrodes and performs an activity such as moving a ball
on the table and then this system records the brain wave activity which takes
place as soon as the person moves the ball.
In the next demonstration of the researchers, the
person have been asked simply to think about the performing various activities
so that system could monitor their brain waves and compare them to the earlier
stored pattern which was recorded while performing the task.
When the same brain wave pattern is detected by the
system, a robotic arm was engaged which is preprogrammed for mimicking the
actions of the human activity. This system has been programmed by the
researchers in order to reproduce a human activity by suing human thoughts.
As there were multiple prior efforts by the
researchers and Top MBA College in Jaipur with BMI systems but they have only focused only on instigating the
activity. But in this new study, they have efficiency of a BMI system by considering
targeted robotic action while the person is engaged in the other activity.
Their result is the system through which a person can
control three limbs at once. In order to test and demonstrate this system,
volunteers have been asked to participate in BMI training and using this system
for balancing a ball on the flat surface along with use of robotic arm for
grabbing and moving an empty bottle.
It is reported by the researchers that these
volunteers have fallen into two different groups which are those who were quite
successful to carry out desired tasks and those who were not.
