Submarine That Requires No Engine
A propulsion concept has been developed by the
researchers for the swimming robots and these kinds of robots can exploit the
fluctuations in the temperature in the water for the purpose of propulsion
without any need of an engine as well as propellant and power supply. In order
to initiate the research, a 7.5 centimeter mini submarine has been developed by
the researchers which are equipped with the paddles.
These mini submarines by the researchers and Top Private EngineeringCollege in Jaipur have been fabricated completely by using a
multi-material 3D printer. These findings of the researchers have been
published in many news papers. The paddles of the submarine have been actuated
with the help of propulsion element which is triggered by the two shape memory
polymer strips which is previously developed by the researchers.
These polymers have been designed in order to expand
the warm water as well as they can power the robot by acting like the muscles. If
the water is heated in which the submarine is floated, then the expansion of
the muscle can cause the element for quickly snapping a well as triggering a
paddle stroke. The geometry and material of the robot have defined the
directional motion, force as well as timing of the paddle stokes etc.
Currently, each actuating element has the ability to
execute a single paddle stroke and then it should be reprogrammed manually. But
according to the Best Engineering Colleges Rajasthan 2016, the task of fabricating
the swimming robots with the several actuators is quite possible. For this
purpose, a mini submarine has already been made by the researchers through
which the paddle can be forwarded with one stroke as well as it releases a coin
and negative back to the starting point along with a second paddle stroke in
the opposite direction.
These all can be done by the sensing changes in the
temperature of the water. The variation of the geometry of the polymer muscle
is allowing the researchers of for defining the sequence at which the paddle
stroke can be triggered. The thin polymer strip has the ability to faster in
warm water and that’s why it responds faster than thicker ones.
